THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO CAME TO OUR 2ND ANNUAL RELAY FOR LIFE BOUT!!

And what a great couple of bouts they were!

Teame AWESOME took on Team YOU WISH in the first match-up. Since this was a mixer comprised of all-star skaters from out-of-town teams (and Missfits, of course), many of us had never played with each other, let alone met one another. A mixer is always a great opportunity to learn how to adapt to different playing styles, and this was no exception! Backwards blocking, strategic plays, and fast jamming were the main components of this bout, and the scores were pretty even within the first half. But by the end of the second, Team AWESOME had bested Team YOU WISH with a score of 187-100. Thanks to all the players who travelled many miles to play with us Missfits, and a very special thanks to my captain on Team AWESOME, Diamond Dust, for being an amazing leader and keeping us all in check. Awesome! :)

The packs plan their moves on the opposing jammers.

Team AWESOME gets ready for the jammer.

The second bout found two of our home teams battling it out, which is definitely a crowd-pleaser. There’s always been a certain degree of rivalry between the Alphabetties and the pTERRORdactyls, and we could certainly feel it when we were out on the track. Those Betties were putting some hard hits on us Dactyls! There were many times when slow-derby came into play, whether it was stalling at the pivot line, or lining up on the outside of the track to let our jammers by. There were also some fast packs, too, which meant the jammers had to work extra hard to catch up and score some points. In the end, the pTERRORdactyls won with a score of 162, against the Alphabettie’s 130.

Vicious works the front of the pack.

Congrats to the MVP’s of both bouts:

YOU WISH: Amanda Tori Suicide

AWESOME: Charlapayne

Alphabetties: Bruiz E. Homemaker

pTERRORdactyls: Brunette Bruiser

Fan Favorite: T. Wrecks (Thanks for everyone who voted! The proceeds went to a good cause, and I got a pretty kick-ass ribbon about it!)

Personally, I know I was more than a little nervous to be playing in two bouts, back to back, in the same day. So to all my fellow Missfits who did the same, give yourselves a pat on the back…that is, if you are able to move your arms yet. :)

Less Than a Week Away!!

The Missfits have been keeping busy lately! In case you’ve missed it, both of our travelling teams (the All-Stars and Wanna B’s) have been out of town and tearing it up on the track!

On April 7th, the All-Stars took on the St. Chux B team in Missouri. Seems like it was worth the trip! All-Stars beat St. Chux Hell’s Bells with a score of 170-94!

Our Season Opener!

If you weren’t at the Interstate Center last Saturday, you sure missed out! Two great bouts filled with hard hits, fast skating, and two well-earned victories.

Bouts one found the KATS battling the DOGS in this “Animal House”- themed bout. There ain’t nothing better than a little Missfit on Missfit action, and this bout did not disappoint. Keeping the score fairly even throughout this white vs. black mixer, both teams had some great blocking strategy…and some quick jammers! Amongst the wily jammers sneaking through the blockers were Cirque D. Slay for the black team, and Machete Crocker for the white…both named bout MVP’s! While the jamming was excellent on both teams, we can’t forget about the blockers who paved the way and threw down those hard hits! Multiple front and back walls helped in slowing down black and white jammers, but in the end, team white was the winner with a score of 122-113 over team black. What a close bout!

The main event pitted the Missfit All-Stars against the Chicago Outfit Shakedown, whose skating we knew little about. We soon found out that they build some mean four-person front walls, and they used a lot of jammer line strategies when blocking. Their jammers were super fun to race, and the Shakedown definitely gave us a run for our money. And despite multiple major penalties on many of the players on both our team and their’s, no one was ejected this time! The Missfit All-Stars kept a healthy lead during both first and second halves of the bout, claiming a hard-earned victory with a score of 162-117. The MVP for the Missfits was the amazing Ice Hurt, who jammed and blocked her way through the pack like a pro. For the Shakedown, we named the Contortionist, who lived up to her name by the way she manuevered her way around the track!

We also let the fans vote on their favorite skater, and (no surprise here), it was awarded to Amanda Tori Suicide, who always puts on a good show!

Next weekend, the All-Stars take on St. Chux in Missouri! Feel like a road trip? Get your tickets now!

Did ya hear?!?!

Missfits took over the radio waves this morning!

Ginger Spite, Dinah D. Molisher, and Sunshine Bash Her visited our favorite local radio station, 101.5, and sat down for a chat with our #1 fan, Susan…or should we say “Brusan!”

Don’t forget- our first home bout of the season is THIS SATURDAY! Don’t have your tickets yet? It’s ok! Click here to purchase tickets, or get them at the door on Saturday.

See you there!!

What Have the Missfits Been Up To During the Off-Season?

A lot! We’ve been keeping busy, both on-skates and off. We’ve increased our practices to get ready for the new season, and we’ve been a part of some great events these past few months!

In February, we participated in a literacy event for Heartland Head Start, a local Bloomington-Normal early education program. Held at the YWCA, the theme was all about the circus! The Missfits were on hand, in full gear, to skate with the kids (who wore slippery socks over their shoes!). The turn-out was great, and we had a blast showing the kids some of our derby moves. :)

T. Wrecks and Bruiz E. Homemaker take the kids for a skate!

The Missfits took the Polar Plunge again this year…brrrrrr! When they say “Freezing for a Reason,” they really mean it! We were one of the first teams to jump into Miller Park Lake on February 25th, and boy, was that water cold. But it was all for a great cause, and due to all of the donations, we were able to raise a lot of money for the Special Olympics!

To see the Missfits interviewed before the plunge, click here.

This month, Normal Community High School asked our league if we could drop by their PE classes to explain the sport of roller derby and show the students some demonstrations of game-play. And you know we always love to talk derby, so naturally we accepted! Who knows, there might be some future skaters, refs, and NSO’s in that crowd!

Also in March, we helped out with the Miller Park ”Stampede,” the annual 5K run sponsored by our local zoo. The Missfits were asked to be the traffic directors along the route. Now, while we’ve been known to stop traffic during our summer carwashes, it was a little cold to bust out the bikinis! Therefore, we relied on the handy stop signs and reflective jackets provided. Thankfully, all the runners made it to the finish line safe and sound, and we were happy to help. :)

Mr. Bates stops traffic!

We also had a fundraiser at the Laugh comedy club this month, featuring two awesome local bands, The Drop Dead and Werepire Day. What a night! The music was great and drinks were flowing. We had ticket giveaways and derby trivia, not to mention a Missfit dance party, per usual. Thanks to the Laugh for having us, and the bands for keeping us entertained!!

Our Wanna B’s traveled to Roselle, IL on Sunday, March 11th to take on the Dupage Derby Dames! The B’s pulled out a huge win in their first bout of the season, with a score of 113-69 ! Way to go, B’s!! Here is our very own Ice Hurt with the recap:

Bout recap by: Ice Hurt

WANNA B’S @ the DUPAGE DERBY DAMES

The first half of the bout was neck and neck. Both teams had strong defensive packs, as well as a little trouble with jammer penalties. We saw alternating power jams throughout the whole first period, and this kept the bout score tied at 42-42 at the half. In the beginning of the second half, we saw a little more of the same, although the Missfits began to pull ahead and broadened their lead when they started stalling at the jam start during Dupage’s power jams. Dupage had trouble defending against the strategy and opted to take a knee. Because the jam whistle had blown, this resulted in filling their penalty box up with blockers. With the weakened Dupage packs, the Missfits were able to hold the dames at 69 points, winning the game with a score of 113-69!

MVP’s went to Deadtyme Skarebear for the Wanna B’s and Pink Pow-Her Ranger for the Dames.

Wanna B's!

While the B’s were tearing it up on the track, some of the Missfits represented the league at a very special dinner hosted by Relay for Life in recognition of the top 20 fundraising teams of 2011. We were the number two team to raise the most funds, thanks to our very first home bout last May. We couldn’t be more proud of the reason we skate- to help those in need. This is a cause that is very dear to many of us on the league, and we were honored to be invited to this special event.
